The Vollies Still Need Our Help!

100_5976-medium.JPG

Thanks to a huge tip from an anonymous reader for this story.

To summarize:

  • The Vollies put out a desperate call for financial help way back when, in a community paper. Here
  • A reader commented asking where the money went from the sales of one of their properties. Here
  • The President of the Vollies responded by saying:

“This is the first year that I am president of the corporation. I haven’t gotten any answers in regards to the past books before I was sworn in October. The Fire Council (our board of directors) was supposed to have the answers. I don’t have any access to past books.”

The tipster was able to download and send to us the last couple of year’s worth of the Vollies IRS 990 forms. All of this information is public record and can be downloaded from the NY State Website and other sites. A 990 is a tax form that tax exempt organizations fill out yearly.

According to the 2005 tax form, the Vollies lot sold for $250,000 (netting them $244,923). Expenses for 2005 were about $130,000 (and we all know costs rise each year for most everything). The truck payment is $30k/year due in March. Insurance policies cost $40,000 in 2005 – sounds high but they have to insure the vehicles, the properties, members, patients, etc. Costs of utilities & telephone expenses, vehicle fuel & repair & maintenance, training, office supplies, postage & other miscellaneous items totaled another $60,000 – utilities & telephone alone were $30,000.

Even if costs remained the same for 2006 & 2007, the money from the sale of the lots would be used up already. Insurance & truck payments are due at the beginning of the year ($70,000), and, if you add 1/4 of the rest of the miscellaneous expenses, already for 2007 the Vollies have had to shell out at about $85,000.

Mrs. Garson insists that the financial records be audited. Audits are not required by the Attorney General’s Office for organizations that raise less than $100,000 from the public. And audits are quite expensive.

The board members from 2005 were

Are there any suggestions on how to Help the Vollies? We should come up with some ideas on how to make our community a better place to live.

[please do tell where all the money went for the land sold.
i don't think a proper explanation was given. besides the
vollies are a great organization best in brooklyn but to
be quite honest its a big "click" seems they pick and choose
who they would want on there "TEAM"

I have to call shenanigans on the vollies for selling that lot. Maybe their defunct website should be used to report to the community about their books.

It should be known that the land has already been built up on and people are living there.

I would have to agree that it seems like there is too much of the same person involved with selling property and trying to be involved in the community.

Hmmmmmm. Is it possible that person bought one of their 2 sons or daughter a new house? Or maybe the money from the sale was donated to a nice Jewish organization on behalf of that persons husband.

The Vollies, as an organization, lost a lot of the neighborhood’s trust. No one wants to donate when they think they were conned. Two lots were sold from under our noses without any community input. The residents of GB shoul have had something to say since we are the ones who support the Vollies. I think the books should be made public & if there was any wrong doings there should be proseacution.

People, the lot sold in 2005 for $250k – it’s 2008! Even if expenses didn’t rise, that money was gone in 2006…anybody know an accountant who has no conflict of interest who would be willing to do an audit for free?

To the first Anonymous, was your application for membership rejected that you talk about picking people for a team? As far as I have heard they are desperate for members…

This surely is a great country we live in, where else can people hide behind the curtain of anonymity, and slander others without the fear of repercussion? The problem is that the people of this community still think its the vollies of the “old days” when there were plenty of members and even more waiting to join. The truth is that we are extremely short on members and the statement that there is a “clique” (proper spelling) and that we select who we want is ridiculous. We select people who we feel are able to perform the duties assigned to them both physically and mentally. The problem is that there is no one from the community stepping up to join and so we make do with what we have, people are still talking about a land sale that was needed to pay for our vehicles. Our operating budget has gone up naturally as has the cost of living and that money was acquired 3 years ago, it has been long spent to keep us operational. People need to stop trusting to rumors and stories and outright lies. The bottom line is the vollies need the help of the community that it serves and if the community isnt willing to pitch in then it has no right to criticize.
The department is going through a transition of leadership and we will need all the help and support we can get to stay on our feet. If there is anyone who has any constructive suggestions then feel free to stop by the firehouse and drop them in our mailbox and they will surely be welcomed and considered. Live bodies who want to serve the community are also greatly welcomed.

Commitment is the key to joining, as I’m sure you’ll agree to post above. Unfortunately, there are not many who are willing to commit, including myself I admit, at least not at this point in my life with small kids as much as I would truly like to. I don’t want to be that person who says they will join and then one day say, “Sorry, I can’t do it because of such and such” and leave someone in the lurch. The vollies have been there time and again for my family through the years and when my time is right, I’ll pay back and God willing, its not too late. Until then, I do the best I can as far as contributing and going to the benefits. I hope that we can as a community can put our heads together to keep you all afloat and never lose you. You are too big of a value to us.

All of Gerritsen Beach is a Clique. You have cliques starting in grade school that’s life.

I don’t know of any improprieties with moneys involving the vollies but would this really shock anyone? Think Kiddie Beach.

staying anynomous is a way of life. How many times has a “friend” said to you, you didn’t hear this from me but….
Or I’m not sure if its true but word has it…….
My favorite is this is just a heads up but…..in case you say something about someone who someone else may know.

Personnally I’ve always found it amusing since i very rarely speak to anyone in the neighborhood who does not live within a 3 block radius of my home.
Unless of course I’m up the avenue buying beer & cigarettes.
but now with the price of cigarettes I’ll need a new reason to be seen. Maybe a video store will open again

Before the lots were sold the donations were not supporting the budget and after the lots were sold the donations are still not supporting the budget. There has not been any drastic change in donations after the lots were sold. So for the residents that say they don’t donate because the Vollies sold the lots that is just an excuse for you to use when you don’t want to donate to the vollies, and have never donated to the vollies in the first place but your still going to keep complaining about the organization.
Complaining about this issue that has been long over for more than a year is hurting the Vollies in membership and I know for a fact it lowers the moral of the existing membership to the level that they dont even care about the community anymore or the amount of hours they have spent donating to the community in training and responding to alarms. So its going to come to the point that all the members are going to walk away. It will not be the funding that kills the Vollies it is going to be the lack of membership.
Therefore, if you want the Vollies to keep responding to you in an emergency I suggest the community to stop their non-sense.

In response to anonymous who says that we should sell everything and close up…. All I can say is that if the community as a whole, feels that way and will not step up to lend a hand, you will certainly see that happen. I am not a life long resident and in fact have only lived here for 4 years but I have seen great support for other organizations within the neighborhood and I thought that the majority of people would feel the same about the vollies, I may have been mistaken about that. I was not here for what transpired prior and I certainly cannot respond to accusations that have been made. Perhaps that was something to have been taken up back then but apparently was not. I can only tell you that the membership we have presently strongly believes in helping the community and loves what it does. The feeling of helping a neighbor, whether its someone you know or not, cannot be described. It’s the reason many joined and its the reason some have remained even through the tough times. I realize there are many out there who dont care one way or the other and thats fine, this is still america and we have that right My only hope is that there are some out there who may give the vollies a chance before condeming us and even more so, I hope that more will donate whatever they can, be it time or money to keep us going.

It amazes me that just about no one in the Beach is an adult. Almost everyone that has posted anything writes from anonymous. Do any of you know that all you have to do is give up 3 hours a week to be a member of the vollies. I have a 1 year old and am a single mom if I can work full time and handle everything on my plate and do the vollies, anyone can. You ALL need the grow the hell up and be adults here. The vollies do alot for the beach. I hate when people complain when we have to call the city cause we don’t have enough members to go, but they wont pick up an application. If you want to call 911 go ahead maybe I will be able to sit down and finish a dinner with my family.

People write “anonymously” because they might not want fingers pointed at their opinions, at least that’s how I feel anyway. I don’t need someone knowing who I am and coming up to me irate one day telling me off because they didn’t agree with or like what I had to say on here. Can do without that bullshit.

In reference to the vollies plight, with young ones in tow where there may be a time where I am needed, and I don’t have a sitter, how can I do it? Its not that easy. Like I said, I don’t want to leave someone in the lurch. I don’t have anyone to rely upon in a minute’s notice. Also, it was never known to me all these years that three hours is the minimum amount of time the vollies required as a member, but its something to consider for sure, so thank you for pointing that out because its something I never knew until today. Maybe there should be some sort of post about these types of things on here, like what type of support the vollies need and maybe from there, more people could be in better understanding to lend a hand?

I don’t live in Gerritsen Beach anymore and like to check out the website to see whats going on in the beach because I miss the neighborhood and the people. I like to check out the current events and I like to see the pictures posted of my friends and their children.

I came across this article and I have to say, I wonder if anyone really thinks before they write. To clear things up, no one puchased me a home besides myself and my hardworking husband. Also, no one has purchased my siblings a house. So, Anonymous please get your facts straight. Also I would like to let you know how upset it is to hear you speak such malicious lies about my mother. You may be on this board for fun and think nothing about hurting someones reputation. So, Anonymous if there are any other matters you would like to discuss feel free to contact info@gerritsenbeach.net and I will make sure he knows how to get in touch with me.

This is a great website, but I have to say when it is used as a weapon to hurt people there is a problem. I won’t have someone like you change my view of the beach. It has always been a place where people stuck together in times of need. There always have been a select few that have created rumors and like to spread them, but I know that the rest of the beach is filled with intellegent people that know that the rumors that you are spreading is a bunch of crap. I was going to defend my mom, but you know what? She doesn’t need defense. She is an amazing person and I know that the majority of the people know how much she does for the community.

The NYC FD in an emergency situation could never handle a floud or hurricane situations in GB on its own. On Sept 11 2001 the GBFD was called on by our city to stand fast for 321.
Look no one is perfect but I hope the nieborhood can see that we are an important part of the works here. I not going to start firing off rants and raves about the other community organization.

I am not too familiar with the situation, but does anyone know who the treasurer is at the vollies? Why don’t we find out who writes the checks and takes care of the funds. From what I understand in any organization, the treasurer is the ONLY one that has any access to funds. I think the treasurer should tell us where the money went.

That regime is gone, the time to ask where the money went was back when whatever occured actually, or not, occured. People are still talking and arguing over something that is in the past, the people running the organization now are trying to get it back in shape, to ask themm about something that happened when they weren’t even members is ridiculous. People are dancing around the whole thing with innuendo and rumors, you should have just gone to the vollies back in 2004 or 2005 or whenever this sale happened, and demanded answers then. I think now you have to live with the fact that you missed your chances to inquire, procrastination is a bad thing and we are all guilty of it but dont blame the present members and board members for something that happened prior to their being here.

  35. Mrs Garson says:

Let me tell you about giving back to your community!

The Vollies were there for my father and brother when I was growing up. They were there for the fire in the wall in
my mom’s house. They were there for the broken leg, the asthma attacks in the middle of the night and the febrile seizures.
The reason I joined the Vollies in 1986 was that when I called them for help and my daughter wasn’t breathing…no one answered their emergency phone. I went down to the firehouse to find out what happened and they handed me an application. I wanted to make it so that the feeling of being lost without help from the Vollies was never felt by anyone ever again. It was a horrible feeling. I had my dying daughter in my arms and I didn’t know what to do when there wasn’t our Vollies to help.
Since then, I gave back for 21 years. I drove the firetruck and motor pump operator. I became a firefighter, I dispatched from my house 24/7 sometimes. I became an EMT and Instructor. I taught many of the EMT’s at the firehouse and held many drills. I assisted in baby deliveries and 8 heart starts. The list goes on and on as so did the years of happiness and also sadness for the loss of some patients that didn’t make it. There were many days of tears.
I can’t tell you how many nights we had calls.. one after another. Do you know that each call lasts at least 1 hour?
I can’t tell you how many times I locked up my office to go on a call and when the day was over sometimes there were 5 calls for help. This is what the Vollies do. The pleasure of seeing someone that you know from the community walk through the door when a member of your family is helpless…….is priceless.. I know.. It happened to me many times.. that’s why I felt I always made a difference.
When you talk about money I know only what I know. I don’t know about anyone else except for when I was Vice President…. I only assisted in running the meeting.. No checks to sign.. No money to count…. When I was President last year the annual fund drive came back to life as did alot of new membership and all checks were double signed by me and the Treasurer.
Most years there is a change in Corporation Officers. This year Mike stepped up to the Plate to take
over President. He’s trying very hard. I hear he’s doing a great job.

I know over the last few years there has been checks and balances. Ask John Walsh about the lots . He was the only one that got paid for doing anything. He knows where the money went. He’s an attorney that handled the transaction.
It would be great if some of the doubters would join the Vollies and get involved with their community. You never know when you’ll need them. It would be a shame to call them and not get an answer.
Remember. …They’re you’re Volunteer Fire Department..

Please be proud of their tireless efforts They’re there because you need them.

April, I don’t even know your mom, never met her, but the whole “house” thing and”Jewish organization” is just an opportunity for some small jealous person to take a shot and see where it lands.

I have lived in Gerritsen Beach, had a business in Gerritsen Beach, have friends in Gerritsen Beach, and still never cease to be amazed at the amount of ridiculousness propogated by some small minded, provencial (and I’m being generous) rabble rousing bigots, masquerading as “concerned citizens”. They don’t represent the majority and I was actually impressed that it was almost all grammatically correct and spelled right. Almost.

The neighborhood is what it is. Practically everyone’s related and likes to be an expert on everyone else’s business. Think about it.

The Vollies are a community organization. If the community doesn’t like the way it’s running, they can participate and change it. Sounds like the new president is a pretty busy guy. And clearly he cares. People are upset they didn’t “know” something happened, but what if they were aware the lots were being sold? What would they have done? Um, oh yeah, nothing.

In everyone’s defense, they have to be anonymous, because people overreact and are confrontational in the Beach. You can’t call the cops on someone else’s felonious kid who breaks your window because his dad is “on the job” and people don’t really seem to know when to stop escalating their nonsense. I have actually seen people try to justify horrible things that they did to other people after their “victims” defended themselves…..

So, try to walk it off, and count yourself lucky that you have a hardworking husband, organizations to donate to, etc. Your antiSemitic posting friend here, clearly has no life.

Remember, that people just like to talk crap about people doing better than they are as an excuse for why they aren’t doing anything about their own crappy existences….

Everyone who ever drank a beer, thinks they can run a bar.
Everyone who ever worked for anyone, thinks they can be a better “owner”.
Everyone who ever Lived in a house, knows EVERYTHING about the real estate market and what YOUR house should be priced at, who should buy it,etc…
Everyone who ever blew out a match is apparently qualified to discount the Vollies firefighting and life saving assistance…

Of course, until one of their binge drinking, triple parking, road raging kids causes an accident, or they themselves need medical attention…..what?…I can just see it….9-1-1 will never find you in the Old Section in someone’s illegal basement apartment….but the Vollies….oh yeah, sure wish they were around…

Every organization has its issues. If the community really cares, let them get involved. Otherwise, it’s just mean spirited gossip.

    Here’s a thought:

To those out there who think the vollies should shut its doors or have unkind things to say about its members. How about one day, you are in need of medical care – or god forbid your child. Your kid is out riding their bike and breaks their leg, gets badly cut, whatever. A vollie drives by, sees you in distress on their way home from their job and stops to give you a hand, administers medical care (for which they’ve been trained, by the way) and offers you a ride to the hospital in their own car. To me, and to GB, its a nice little perk we have. Its something unique and something that we could all benefit from at some point, no?

And, as far as those that have things to say about Mrs. Garson, although I don’t know much about why people say such terrible things about her and maybe you do have your reasons, but I’ll throw a scenario out there as well. How about dear old granny needing CPR because she went into cardiac arrest. Its not you, but Granny herself who makes the call to 332-3232 and Mrs. Garson shows up at her door and saves her life. Would you not be the least bit grateful to her? Think about it, or would that not count?

I think we can all agree the vollies are important. They do make a difference. there have been fires that the city dispatched engines from the firehouse on Ave U & Coney Island Ave as well as or instead of the house on gerritsen & U. This could have been disasterous had the vollies not been closer & also called.

Ulike some instances of fire vs police at a scene, you never see a problem with the city & GB at a scene, they work together.

The beach will never change, we will always have cliques, and opinions, and anonymity and hopefully the vollies. They are a part of the beach.

The fact that a lot of people are related down the beach was brought up & yes, this causes problems when some “kid” does wrong but it also is what makes the neighborhood what it is. Just like the fatc that some kid’s parent is on the job. The beach was made up of blue collar workers mostly. Police, Fire, Sanitation. Our streets were safe and clean and garbage cans were put in the yard(unlikenow).
Having a possible relative showing up at any given time kept my friends in line. It was difficult(but of course not impossible) to act out when aunt or uncle so n so is a witness.
So with that long winded ramble, why don’t we all just try to get along???

GB.net, maybe you should just take this topic down from the site. Obviously there are quite a few small minded people out there who just don’t get it. Too many people in GB live their lives to just gossip. Its like living in Peyton Place. There are plenty of opportunities in public forums for people to express their opinions, yet very few take the opportunity. Most in GB like to act like your friend but the second your back is turned they are telling someone else your business. I say delete this topic and all its negative comments and don’t give people the forum to express their negative b.s.

YES we are like peyton place. yes people share others business. Some blame goes to the fact that they are speaking to relatives & just rehashing your daily lives which just happens to include whatever it was you told them. its not malicious its just life in a small neighborhood with a lot or relatives and a lot of people who have lived there since the 40′s 50′s etc. nothing personal, just life in the small city

Bottom line of all this is the vollies cannot exist without neighborhood support,if you want to help in whatever way you can, we can certainly use it. There are always going to be people who criticize us but that’s fine, we are here to help and will continue to do so as long as we can. If anyone out there has taken an interest from all these comments, then stop by and pick up an application and see if you can fit a few hours into your time, I can assure you it will be appreciated. I thank all of you out there who have supported us in the past and hope that you continue to do so. For the detractors out there, remember, change comes from within, instead of bringing negativity, join up and make a difference. Michael Losardo. /President of the Gerittsen Beach Volunteers

GB.net, is it possible for you to remove that posting? I’d feel alot better.

Oh please, people get over it. We have a right to know. If a person didn’t do anything wrong they do not need defending. This is about the Vollies needing help not the Doreen Greenwood story.

If you want to know – then YOU go find it out and let us all know about it. Most of us here don’t give a rat’s ass, or if we do, then it doesn’t worry us so much to keep us up at night for god’s sake. Most of us have bigger fish to fry. What’s done is done, the bottom line is the vollies are still here for us, even with the ‘selling of the lots’, they are still around, they need our help and that was the whole start of this bloody post. Nuff already.

Anonymous2, you have no right telling people to get off the board. This is available to everyone thanks to GB.net. We have to be mature enough to realize that not everyone has a positive view of the situation. The people who are voicing their objections in a negative way have just as much right to be here as you or Doreen. The truth does hurt.

The problem anonymous, is that you just keep ranting and ranting and ranting, over and over and over about the same thing, if you are so concerned about finding out, then walk over to Mrs greenwoods office on the avenue and ask her. Of course you will have to expose yourself unless you wear a bag over your head but at least you will have an answer one way or the other.

Oooh – that’s an idea! I wonder if something like that can be done in the fields – or even in Resurrection’s parking lot – like they used to do in the old days on Ave V. That was fun!

DID ANYONE WHO IS STILL CRABBING ABOUT WHERE THE MONEY FROM THE SALE OF THE LOT ACTUALLY READ THE BEGINNING OF THIS PAGE? IT ACTUALLY TELLS YOU WHERE THE MONEY WENT. IT WENT TO PAY THE FIREHOUSE BILLS WHICH COMMUNITY DONATIONS DONT COVER. AND HOW MANY OF THESE NAY-SAYERS ACTUALLY DONATE TO THE ANNUAL FUND DRIVE. IF EVERYONE IN THE BEACH DONATED THE VOLLIES WOULDNT BE IN THIS PREDICAMENT! JOIN UP OR PUT UP OR SHUT UP!

  66. I love the fact that the ones trying to create chaos out of the money matters DO NOT HAVE THE BALLS TO SIGN THEIR NAMES.

I’ve been to the GBPOA meetings and I know there are people in this community who are trying to make Gerristen Beach a god place to live. However, from what I’ve seen there is not enough support from the 61st precinct, The GBFD are trying the best, but there is a certain amount of suspicion over how they being run.
Now there are trying to do what is best with what they now have.

What the heck does the 61st pct have to do with the Vollies? When you call 911 for a fire, you get the fire Dept on Ave U, if you call for a medical emergency you get an ambulance. Got it? Its amazing how you people are trying to be so evasive. And if people have the option to be anonymous, so be it. Please stop bashing people for expressing their ideas, negative and positive, and for choosing to remain annonymous. Geez, not enough support from the 61 pct, this is the Vollies finances we’re discussing.

I think its interesting that no one commented about jane does comment as to the wherabouts of the vollies chief in all of this. In the tax papers that were posted he is listed as the treasurer and I assume its his wife or daughter is listed as the president, has anyone asked either of them what happened? it seems you people are asking the present leadership… why not go knock the chiefs door and ask him? Is he still the chief/ is he still in the neighborhood?
