DOT Devices Destroyed

Recently on Gerritsen Avenue the Department of Transportation laid out 6 traffic counting devices at the intersections of Florence & Gerritsen, and Cyrus & Gerritsen.

Not surprisingly, 3 of them have been damaged to the point that they aren’t able to work properly. They have been cut, ripped up and moved, and in one case the rubber strip has been laid completely parallel to the sidewalk.

It seems that, as a community, we have been yelling and screaming that we want a traffic light or some sort of traffic control measures on Gerritsen Avenue. However, when it comes down to the actual traffic studies, we are completely hypocritical by destroying the devices that are there to help. Who destroyed these devices? Adults that don’t want change? Kids that see a new target?

I’ve been told that the DOT has been notified and will be replacing the strips, if not already.

1st post, they don’t have them at intersections that need a light.

  • They are not at the right intersection, is a good reason to destroy them. Are you an expert on Traffic study?

This is the intersection (by St. James) that a light has been requested a million times. Allegedly the reason the light has been denied so many times was because there was not enough traffic on Gerritsen Avenue. Therefore I urge everyone with a car to drive over the counters as many times as they can in a day to show we have PLENTY OF TRAFFIC TO WARRANT A LIGHT!!

Oh come on. If the light is needed its needed. But to have to “drive over the counters as many times as they can” is idiotic. Especially when the counters are cut, duh.

Well Anonymous,.. The light is needed and we have been fighting for it for over 20 years now. If you went to any of the meetings regarding this issue, you would know that is EXACTLY what needs to be done,.. and was actually recognized by the DOT. That and the fact that Gerritsen Ave is now considered a one lane, instead of a 2 lane Avenue (due to the painted lines) is supposed to help.
Obviously when the counters are repaired! Hopefully they will stay that way long enough to make a difference.

  • Ever think....

What will a traffic a light cause down Florence Avenue if a light is put up? There’s going to be lots of bottle-necking down Florence and the courts. Another thing: What if cars are lined down Florence waiting for the light to change – how is anyone going to get past the cars, regular cars or even a fire truck? Not much room to swing to the side, you know? I’m not saying I’m against it, but this is something to consider…..

Stupid to cut the lines though. Let DOT do its job.

I guess green streets sound good right about now compared to a traffic light

Debbie..If you go to meetings and fought for a light for 20 years I think you are wasting your time. And if the DOT fixes the counter they need their heads examined.

  • At what point do we all stop working against each other? We will never get this resolved by allowing these kids or adults to destroy the counters. How many times do we go over the same thing? We need to work together. I say let DOT do it’s job and lets see what happens. As for the bullys who destroy things – thats got to stop.

Traffic lights won’t solve anything they should make Cyrus a one-way street as well as Seba. Although it would be an inconvenience, it’s not a big deal if people have to go in through Cyrus and out through Seba it would just make more sense and end the pulling over to let others by and the reckless driving that where no one stops at the Madoc stop sign and people turn off of Cyrus not knowing whats around the corner.

i do these kind of surveys for as apart of my job in response to traffic complaints but when the equip is destroyed I’m not in a real big hurry to help but My dept would big in a big hurry to find out who destroyed the equipment. The stuff the DOT is using is OLD we use mounted computers and cameras so this does not happen.

Vandalism is vandalism and these people if caught should be prosecuted. From what I’ve heard at meetings it is part of the survey to find out about the turning patterns on and off of the Avenue at different locations – not necessarily to have traffic lights at the corners where they have the equipment. The person saying this is a good reason for destroying the equipment is stupid – if someone doesn’t like you it should mean they could beat you up or destroy your property. Destroying property that is not yours is illegal and is not a community oriented thing to do. If you have an opinion go to a community meeting and voice it do not show the children of the neighborhood that destroying things is how you get your way.

The survey is being done at a bad time and will be inaccurate anyway due to the schools being closed – schools buses and parents taking kids to schools, teachers, etc. are not in the traffic flow this week.
