Which One of These Things Doesn’t Belong: Marine Park

Continuing with our “one of these things doesn’t belong” game; up next is 3415 Fillmore Avenue. They completely squared off the front of the house then and added a floor. While walking down Fillmore you will immediately notice its out of character profile.

This is the back:

As a Jew I am offended by the comment from one of my Marine Park neighbors, who was too cowardly to give a name.
As a resident here and who drives past this house every day I see nothing wrong. It’s their house, their property, their money. Is it imposing on you in any way? Or is it just one more annoyance for people who have nothing better to do with themselves but worry about what others are doing? Like it or hate it, just move past it and mind your own business. Maybe you would do better to tend to your own property this spring. Mow your lawns, plant some flowers, paint your house, or better yet: CLEAN UP THE CRAP IN FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE! You may even increase its value. Then some rich Jewish family might offer you a bundle for it.

  14. Concerned Neighbor says:

On one aspect, I agree that religious affiliation has no place in this discussion, even though it is clearly evident that certain religious and ethnic groups seem to be repeatedly guilty of ignoring existing building codes & getting away with little or no punishment. But the comments above highlight the arrogance & ignorance that some people have when it comes to obeying building code laws that are on the books for “everyone” to follow. Just because you own a home does not give you the right to build a structure that violates written laws that were made for a reason. One just has to look at some of the houses in the neighborhood that have been surrounded by condos and had their property values obliterated to understand why we have such laws in place. No one has the right to devalue the worth of a neighbor’s property by obliterating their neighbor’s home with their newly renovated, out of place monstrosity. I see nothing wrong with concerned residents of Marine Park wanting the existing laws applied equally to everyone. Community involvement is what makes it such a great neighborhood in the first place. Those who move in and choose to isolate themselves & not interact with their neighbors diminishes the sense of community that has existed for many years to the benefit of all who live here.

True, but what about the people you don’t let move in. I know several minority families who could well afford to move “into” Marine Park but are not wanted. True?
And when we allow anyone of our own race (white) we now complain because they choose to “isolate themselves & not interact with their neighbors diminishes the sense of community”, ha what a croc. That’s only if you are not minority.

If they don’t have a permit shame on them! I am however fairly sure this area was recently zoned to allow people to build up an extra floor.

However a sense of community doesn’t come from how your renovate your house but how involved in the community you are.

Though we restored our Marine Park home to the original 1920s Arts and Craft’s style I can’t expect everyone to do the same. Still our restoration does not make us a good neighbor. What does is our involvement and interest in the community.

  17. Lifetime Resident says:

It’s easy to say religious affiliation has no place, but when you talk to the man who bought the house just to fix it up and make money on it, he will tell you what he told me: His plan is to sell it to a “rich jewish family” and he wants a “jewish realtor” to sell it. And to “Mitch 220″ What’s offensive is that you live in a beautiful neighborhood your whole life, where everyone has a strong sense of community which keeps the neighborhood a great place to raise your family – We don’t mind who comes in as long as they are coming bec they appreciate our neighborhood and want to join it. Instead we get a group that noticed it for the first time, and wants to come in and not joint it – TAKE IT OVER. They change the houses before they even move in (ugly square boxes with no need for yards or greenery), which leaves the other houses in the shadows and then they buy out the neighborhood stores and change them to strictly kosher places. I know there is some sort of jewish bath house going in on E. 36 and Ave R too. We keep quiet like you suggest and suddenly our home for 50 years which is where our children want to raise their children, is gone and we’re living in a strange neighborhood with strange stores that we have no use for, with no resemblance to what we had. AND BY THE WAY, they are no longer the clean swept well maintained blocks we had, which is why we never had alternate side in this neighborhood for the sanitation to come by and sweep. People in THIS neighborhood sweep and manicure their homes. In Borough Park and those neighborhoods, the sanitation dept. has to come by to do it. If a person wants a house so much larger than the ones in a certain neighborhood — they’re looking in the wrong neighborhood! If you want to come in bec you like the feel of the neighborhood and what it’s about, then by all means…you are welcome to and we’re happy to have you join us.

I have to say, when it’s finished it may not stick out that badly. Put some siding on it and, hopefully, windows in the front, and it could be fine. Most of the detached houses in brooklyn are quite ugly anyway — the other two in this photo are no exception!

  20. Resident Who Lives In &Likes the Houses In Marine Park They Way They Are says:

Comment To Mitch 220: How Long Have You Been A Resident? The problem with this renovation is that it is not being done by “the owner” so it is not their house, their property, their money. It is being done by someone who has done it several times in this neighborhood – Buying properities, renovating to house twenty, and flipping the renovated “monster” for a profit. The character, personality, and charm of the neighborhood is fast fading. The fact that you see no problem with it indicated just how long you have been a Marine Park Resident. Did you buy a flipped house? Perhaps thats why you see no problem with it!

Rigth on to Concerned Neighbor and Lifetime Resident but sorry to say it is alittle to late because the DOB knows what is going on but will not really do much about it because not enough people complain. I have spoke to DOB many times, one time when I asked how is this guy getting away with renovation for $.30,000 because that is what is stated on permit his comment was i quote ” I know but people lie to get away with it” . That’s what I mean when I say too late.
Also Mitch220 you really have not lived here to long or you would know how people around here take care of their homes you are a jacka**. I want to hear from you when this goes up next to you ,your tune and attitude will be much different.
And Also a Lifetime Resident you’ll right sellers should be more mindful maybe all the people who are unhappy should go to the person who lived in this house for all her life because she still lives in the neighborhood on 32nd St ,her family member who was involved in selling this property lives in Long Island, what did he care, one thing and one thing only $$$$ signs.
    And PhotoJeff
How can we stay a community when our new neighbors will not even sent their children to the community schools or shop in the the community stores.
And Marine Parker I’m still baffled on how he got away with no fine and dismissed hearing? blocking driveway still open not resolved who will resolve when DOB stopped by one day after complain was made, was raining and DOB worker did not get out of car, this was witnessed by neighbor,so I’m not just taking this out of the air this really happened because all DOB cars are marked.

Fascinating conversation on this one – latent anti-Semitism coming out – but that construction is a “shonda” (a shame in Yiddish) and certainly out of place. But if zoning permits – take action to restrict it…Don’t criticize owner/developer for doing what he can legally do.

THIS AREA IS ZONED R4 he has every right to do this and this is still considered a bunglow big deal we go from a home with 1124 sq add half floor is still does not meant the sq of a regulation sized home still under 1500sq with add ons this home will be 1400sq big deal with no driveway or back yard and this back yard looks biger no garage like on normal homes only area in brooklyn i know were carports became known as full driveways some have shared carports

funny you talk about not wanting minorities and how the jews are taking over your area when a couple of years ago it was known this area was becoming a ghetto that was the only people coming in and the residents were leaving marine park fast in the span of a year avenue p and parts of quentin were complely changed ryder ? harlem ?difference? even today looks the same the only other people willing to by and save the neboorhood were the jews they saved this neboorhood think back everyone was so excited they could still get any type of money for their home and that they did not have to leave in fear like everyone else

now a couple of years later you forget you were all leaving and this area was known as a do not by area that area it is the next old mill basin

take over the neboorhood ? jews dont even make up ten pecent get the facts right look all over to the next neboorhood in the 20s that is a jewish area about 20 synogoges and like 25 jewish schools and and almost no christians thats a take over st. agnes is not even their anymore it is a jewish school now. christmas time you would not even know marine park had any jewish population at all and the area were they are most is the area by p with the boarded up homes no one wated drive by p and 36 a boarded up home is still their jews that go to marine park cannot afford to be in a established jewish area so they go there with a small jewish population and pray out of an old semi attached one family home and though a small few bought the homes on filmore or that area it is not even common jews have large familys and most of the time would not even think of buying such a small reality home with only 1000sq that could never fit their large family so whats the big deal if a jewish faimly did extend this tiny home not even regulation size to 1400sq still not up to code for regultion size and a parcel of land is minmum 20 x 100 which is 2000sq these homes some how have 1800sq of land

still this improvement makes your homes worth more for two resons updates to the home and area with larger jewish populations become worth more not to meantion the jews stoped the ever increasing popultion of what you did not want their and its funny they say the jews are taking over beacuse there are more blacks currently living in marine park then religious jews look up the facts or just drive and be thankfull you did not have to leave now you can share not run you might even make money on the deal

  27. Avraham says:

Good post, creastbay. So wise guys/gals/whoever here are probably forgetting that Jews are perhaps the most loyal white citizens of New York City and did not flee to such an extent for suburbia and elsewhere as other white population groups (Jews make up about a third of white population in NYC) who ran away in droves in 1950′s, 1960′s, 1970′s and at other periods of time. Come to Midwood, for instance, and look at the residential streets and see what the Jews have done for the neighborhood (which is heavily but not exclusively Jewish), and all these misguided contributors will realize there is no basis to make generalizations accross the board.

Take a walk down on Avenue S and East 36 ST, the stores are all crappy. You have to go to Flatbush to shop at Waldbaums. From the looks of all the 4sale signs in front of the houses it doesn’t look like anyone else is interested in moving in. Marine Pak neighborhood is way over rated, and then again you still have to send your kids to Marine Park JHS, arrgh.

People have for sale signs because they want to get out before the neighborhood before it turns into another Borough Park!

The stores on Ave S are intended to be quick stop neighborhood stores (ie: Deli, nail salon, hardware store, dog groomer). What else do you want on Ave S? Let me guess some Glatt Kosher supermarket. And again, if you aren’t happy with the neighborhood move out. We like our neighborhood and if you don’t want to assimilate into it then go more to Brighton or Borough Park where you’d feel more at home.

This is what I don’t understand. If the homes in his neighborhood aren’t to your liking and you don’t like the stores; then why are you moving into this neighborhood. Find one that has bigger homes or is more architetucally to your liking. But you are moving in here and trying to take over the neighbordhood, when the residents who have been here for years are happy with it. You might say that you are improving the real estate value, which is fine and good if the REST of the residents were happy with how you are changing the look of the neighborhood. But those who aren’t Jewish and have lived here for years are happy with our neighbordhood. Don’t move here if you don’t like it as is.

Get ready for big changes because the middle class working couples just ran out of options. Everything we need and use is going up, up up. Our pay is going down, i.e. Police Officer annual salary 25,000 per year. Try saving for a downpayment to buy a home in Marine Park, even with Mom and Dads help you still won’t qualify.

I have to agree with posters like Concerned Neighbor and Lifetime Resident who feel that the character of the neighborhood is being seriously diminished by the building of these monstrosities.

When we bought our homes, it was with the expectation of a certain amount of space and light, which is gradually disappearing. Some of you may think you’re raising our property values with your palaces, but property values only matter if you want to sell your home. I would prefer to stay and continue to raise my family here but it’s becoming more unpleasant every day. Four way stop signs and traffic lights on every corner, endless parades of school buses on every side street- this neighborhood used to be a pleasure, now it’s a mini- Boro Park. We were happy with things the way they were. If you aren’t, maybe you should have bought elsewhere.

Oh, and should you care to respond, Creastbay, please learn the rules of English and employ some punctuation. Your endless run-on sentence made me throw up my hands in despair. You lost me very early on.

I’m not going anywhere and many of our neighbors feel the same way. We’re happy here even though our homes aren’t, according to you, “real-sized.” Many of us work for the city as police officers, firefighters, teachers- you dare to call these people uneducated? They built this beautiful neighborhood now being hungrily sucked up by people who can’t appreciate the character that’s already here.

I know nothing? Maybe when you get your Master’s, you’ll finally figure out the difference between your and you’re. My kids learned that in second grade at our wonderful neighborhood school, P.S. 222.

@crestbay, What exactly is the point of showing us that some houses are worth more than others? Your post has nothing to do with the subject at all. The point is, this neighborhood was built with houses a certain size for a reason. The size of the streets, the availabilty of parking, etc. makes it unrealistic to crowd them with mansions.

As far as the money you’ll earn some day with your Master’s from NYU, again, what does that have to do with this subject? Your mother the RN who earns 100k is probably a wonderful woman but who would she call if her house were on fire? You, with your Master’s? A society can’t sustain itself with no one doing the work that keeps it moving.

You apparently lack the skills to carry on a discussion or to even recognize that you can’t. I won’t waste any more time on you.

I don’t care who comes into Marine Park as long they are good neighbors ie. keep their property up and not let it get run down, keep their teenagers under control and are mindful of the rights of others. Having said this, I don’t understand why the Orthodox are so disinclined to greet and mingle with people who are not like them. Why do they go to such great lenghts to avoid even saying good morning. On a mixed block why do the Orthodox not encourage their kids to play with differnet types of kids. You even see that divide at the park. It’s really a shame that there is such a distance between neighbors who live in such close proximity to each other.

To comment to” grow up people” if this is next to you, would not like it. On any day come and sit in front of this house and see how many people who do not live on this block have a comment about how it looks, so unless you know for sure you should not comment at all

I live around the corner from this disaster of a home, and like the other residents I too am upset by its over construction. The house has been an eyesore for years and the new owner has only made matters worse, with its out of proportion size and design. It pains me when I read that the new owner is merely a shady Jewish speculator hoping to make a quick buck by selling to a rich Jewish family. Isn’t that against the law? You cannot limit who can purchase a property that is offered for sale! How biased of this person to want to come into a wonderful and established neighborhood with the intention of changing its look and ethnic make up. How prejudicial! I have lived here for 44 years and Marine Park is one of the best, little known neighborhoods in all of NYC. I take offense that people are coming here wanting to “change” it in anyway. By all means buy here, improve your property without infringing on your neighbors, send your kids to the wonderful local schools, and take part in the rich community spirit that has kept families here for generations (mine has been here for 4). To those who are complaining I ask why move here if you are unhappy with what is available? By all means find an area that is a better fit for you and your family and leave Marine Park alone!

  45. Marine Parker says:

I could read through this thread, and sort out multiple statements of obvious discrimination. The Jews can chose their lifestyle. If you happen to drive through a Chinese area, or a Russian area, you will notice that their are many stores that have storefront windows written completely in their native language with absolutely no English translation. Their are multiple metro cards, which backings are only written in Spanish, and no one complains about it. As long as this house follows all the zoning laws, then I see absolutely no harm in building it. I have lived in this neighborhood for around 16 years, and frankly I am glad the Jews have moved in. I am upset that the prices of houses have gone up, but at least if I decide to sell my smallish sized house, I’ll get a good price for it. With all do respect, most of the Jews in the neighborhood happen to keep their front yard clean, except for the average bikes and kid toys. They tend to have neatly trimmed gardens, and clean curb sides. They might not take part vocally in the community, but that’s cause they send to separate schools, separate restaurants, separate cultures. I’m sure its hard for them to associate themselves with a community that sends to different schools, different synagogues and different cultures. These Jews keep to themselves in their community, and do not do anything to bother us, except practice their religion. Last time I checked, their was an amendment passed that states freedom of religion and practice.
Maybe the people of Marine Park should step back for a second, and think, are all these complaints directed to the fact that they are not joint members of the community, or are these complaints a cover up for clear anti-antisemitism.
Please respond, I would love to hear opinions on this issue.

I resent that any time someone disagrees with someone who is Jewish, they are automatically branded anti-Semitic. Explain to me how we are to welcome our new neighbors when one of the first things they do when they move into the community is form their *own* civic association which excludes us. Take a look at this website:

http://www.jccmp.org/index.html Don’t forget to click on the Financial Aid section just for fun. Do you feel welcome there? Were we to form our own Marine Park Christian Civic Association, what would we be called? What is the word for those that exclude us?

My neighbors have lived next door for about five years. They have never once in that time swept the front of their house. They put their garbage out for a family of five in supermarket shopping bags which, by the next day, are torn to shreds by animals and birds and decorating the block. If a dog owner doesn’t clean up after their animal in front of my neighbor’s house, it stays there until it petrifies or I pick it up. Yes, there are people of all groups who do this but our neighborhood was well-kept and that’s how we’ve been able to avoid alternates. This probably won’t last if our new neighbors expect the city to clean up after them as it does in other neighborhoods.

Recognizing differences in our cultures does not mean that we are anti-Semitic, just honest.

@, Where to begin….I am far from stupid and at least I’m willing to stand behind what I say by using my own name. The point that I’m making is that if newcomers want to be welcomed into a neighborhood, perhaps they should not exclude themselves by starting a separate civic association. but instead become active members of the existing group. What about this don’t you understand?

Secondly, there have *never* been alternates in Marine Park and, until recently, they weren’t needed as the residents cleaned the streets in front of their own homes. When people move in expecting someone else to pick up after them, they are sure to be resented. If the streets become dirty as a result and the city institutes street cleaning, these will be the first people to complain about the lack of parking and the tickets that are written.

Most of the Orthodox Jews who have moved into Marine Park came from Midwood or Boro Park, two neighborhoods that do not have civic associations. They formed their own association because no one from their new neighborhood ever told them there was a Marine Park Civic Assoc. Would it hurt terribly to knock on your neighbor’s door and say welcome.
Are you afraid your prejudices would turn out to be terribly wrong? Jews are taught as children to be tolerant of all people. It is the result of our history. You will find out your perceptions are completely wrong.

        1. LQuinlan says:

Dorothy, I grew up in Boro Park and spent half my life in an Orthodox community. My perceptions are born of experience. Maybe your family raised you to be tolerant of all but you don’t speak for all Jewish people. To this day I remember playing in front of my house and having the cross ripped from neck and thrown on the ground by a “tolerant” cheder boy.

As far as civic associations, both exist in the Midwood & Boro Park neighborhoods and always have. When Orthodox families began to move into the community, it would have been very easy to ask the real estate agent, Lew Fidler’s office or a neighbor about community organizations but they chose to start their own to address only their needs. My neighbors have yet to shovel the walk on a snowy day or sweep the papers that blow in front of their house. They never acknowledge my holidays, though I have always recognized theirs.

For all those who may think otherwise, my real name is Louise Quinlan and I am known all over the Marine Park community. Feel free to say hello to me at a neighborhood civic meeting or Marine Park event.
