The Manhattan Beach Neighborhood Association (MBNA) held its first meeting at P.S. 195 and was well attended by 150 to 200 people. After a brief introduction by the president Alan Ditchek he introduced Brooklyn district attorney Charles Hynes. Hynes welcomed the group and introduced a speaker to talk about teen online safety.
Although the Online Safety presentation was informative and interactive, you usually don’t see these kinds of speakers at local civic meetings. The presenter who usually goes to schools and talks to children was now talking to an audience where the average age was in the 50’s. People were commenting that their children are now in their 30’s. It was still a good source of information. I was glad to draw a laugh as the one guy in the back with his hand raised for having a myspace page. (Oh and next time set the laptop resolution, not the projector resolution set before you begin.)

NYPD 61 Precinct Captain Georgios Mastrokostas was there to re-introduce himself to Manhattan Beach and to briefly talk about his summer patrol plans for the community and to wish the new group good luck.
Now came the real introduction from Alan Ditchek: he thanked Ira Zalcman for dismissing him so he and others can start this new group. He then went on to talk about his qualifications to be president, commenting about how long he’s been in Manhattan beach and his memories of the area. He also said he wasn’t going to have any secret meetings, no back door decisions, no clicks, and no verbal intimidation
Afterwards P.S. 195′s principal, Arthur Forman, sang the theme song to Mr. Rogers, which I’m not going to lie was a bit creepy. He congratulated the new group for striving to maintain the beauty and character of the neighborhood.
Councilman Mike Nelson said multiple times that there were 350 people in attendance, which is not close at all to the actual number. I counted at around 155 with maybe 175 at its peak. It’s very clear that Councilman Mike Nelson is very much a part of this new group, organizing the meeting and even thanking his wife for being apart of it. He stated that he will be going to both community meetings as much as his schedule permits.

Everyone was sworn in by Councilman Mike Nelson. Members of the MBCG board include Alan Ditchek, Ron Biondo, Al Smaldone, Albert Hasson, Edmund Dweck, Michael Troupt, Vicki Klur, and Arthur Gershfeld. There are 13 total board members but I’m missing 5 because I have no idea how to spell their names.
Dozens signed up for the new group at the end of the meeting.

What exactly has Mike Nelson done for his constituents? When you read the papers and see comments from other council members, his name is never mentioned as if he is a ghost….I dont feel he has served this community but rather himself….I see all the new apartments going up where once single family homes stood…the area is starting to look like Manhattan and is too congested.

GREAT to see such a group of really committed people who care about bringing their community together as real neighbors.

Apparently you cant count at all, because when I was there at the meeting I counted…twice and I still came up with the same number.
Just for the lulz I put little red dots on all of the people there in my picture that you clearly see 300+ people in.

by coincidence there are exactly 150 red dots on these people. Now because we cant see everyone lets say we add 30 for a total of 180, then with people leaving early and such lets round it up to 200. Adding 50 people is generous and now I just feel bad for you because you never learned to count.
Learn to count then come back to the rest of the class.

While there may only have been 150-175 physically present, with a few more early departures and yet-to-arrives not counted, countless others, like myself, couldn’t make it but were there in spirit. Councilman Nelson, being a gifted clairvoyant and political prognosticator, knew this, and so his calculated, albeit unverifiable, estimate is correct and even a bit conservative. If even more people show up next month to fill those empty seats, Nelson will be seen as a true visionary. But it’s good that he’s not the City Comptroller.

Don’t even get me started, it is Nelson who lacks guts, and he is stealing our money by actually collecting a city taxpayer funded salalry of over $120,000. All for what? He achomplishes nothing except giving out the basic allowance of member items that any freshman legislator could get.
Most of this money goes to groups that also pay Chaim Deutsch of Nelson’s staff.
Deutsch (rumored to be contemplating a run for Mikey boys seat) is only on nelson’s staff in name and salary only. Truth is he never has completed a time sheet or fulfilled his “hours” in a legal way.
As a tax payer i consider this stealing our money, don’t you?

Councilman Nelson is a senile, embarrasssing thief. He does not work for our area. Just walk up into his office, or heck even try to call. The Councilman is never available to his constituents unless they ahve donated money to him.
For example the Sahara restraunt. Which was overwhelmingly rejected by the Community Board, includind Sheila Nelson.
Ironically the Conflicts of Interest Board is investigating said actions because a Councilmembers wife is not supposed to vote on Community Board matters that are in the district the spouse represents.
Furthermore to make matters look even more strange after Nelson had the matter quickly passed by the council it was uncovered that he has taken in thousand of dollars in donations from the Family that runs the Sahara.
Nelson was even on the record as saying he was against the project, then after some money changed hands he changed his mind.
Boy oh Boy. We have a Councilman who does nothing but take money for him and his chosen predescor, and furthermore has his wife on the Communtiy Board voting in matters that the NYC Conflict of Interest Board has said she should not be involved in. Tssk Tssk.
But hey I guess since I am anonymous it means I am wrong. Try again. The wandering councilman and his power hungry wife should hit the road before term limits or an indictment force them out.

AnonAnon you asked for real facts…here is a fact…Ever look at the Sheepshead Bay and Neck Road subway stations…including the surrounding filthy streets…maybe if he took a walk around the area he would see what needs to be cleaned up. There are other messy spots but he most likely never walks around to see the quality of life improvements that can be made. The Avenue U streets by the subway are a major disgrace and rats are common. I dont think I need to contact his office directly to complain about this type of issue…a Councilman should know his district and I think he is selective in who he serves. Also if I were him, I would be interested in what my constituents think of my job performance whether negative or positive especially if I wanted to move on to higher office…sometimes criticism is the basis for the road to improvement.
