Foursome Diner aka Gaping Hole

This is what is left of the Foursome Diner.  It will soon become a Walgreens.

  • I had many happy lunches and dinners at their counter and sitting at tables with friends in the 1970s. And late night (usually after a movie at the Elm or Midwood or Ave. U theaters) snacks, like on my first date with someone on Thanksgiving Eve 1972 after we saw Erich Rohmer’s “Chloe in the Afternoon” at the Midwood. We both had tea and corn muffins. She’s still a close friend and she’ll be sad to hear that the Foursome is gone.

But we need more Walgreens, right?

We already have plenty of chain drug stores in the area. We needed the diner more.

  • It’s a sad era for Brooklyn. That place made some of the finest egg creams around…why is development eating up all of our fine diners? What’s next? KP? Del Rio? Will somebody come and eventually put an end to this madness?

Should have built a Starbucks instead.

Any idea when the Foursome family will open the new place?

Obv it’s out with the old and in with the new. Not sure what’s so good about that sometimes.

@ Erica : IT might be a sad era for Bklyn losing the best Egg Creams in town—but aren’t Egg Creams of a different Era? I don’t think I’ve ever had an egg cream, or known anyone to order an egg cream in my presence, in my entire life. I’m sure they are delicious, but are something of the past along with 5-cent soda pop and war biscuits. But perhaps if the Foursome made the best contemporary cuisine they would still be in business. Having said that–aren’t the owners of the Foursome opening up a new diner on Nostrand Avenue? You can get your egg creams there.

Closing the Foursome is sad because they did have very good food, service and prices. Since the closing we have tried other diners in the area and they simply do not match or come close to the Foursome. An added plus was the easy parking.

Try Kings Plaza Diner. Parking – larger then Foursome. Burgers better than foursome.

Finally some construction activity at the old Foursome site. Got tired of staring at an empty hole for more than a year. Does anyone know if it will still become a Walgreens? There had been word that they scaled back their expansion plans due to the bad economy. Hopefully they remain commited and that is what is now being built on the site. We certainly don’t need another row of empty storefronts.
