If the Mikos name in the photos are relatives of Frankie Mikos they are probably great athletes. Frankie was a great athlete.

Is that what the handrails were built for? I hope that they have a lot of insurance because one of these kids are going to split their heads open and you know good old Mom and Pop will be suing the city.

this is exactly what this handrail was built for… it is a skatepark — it is meant to be grinded on… buck up gerritsen girl — real skateboarders and bike riders know all the risks and consequences that could happen when attempting to do a trick on this handrail or on anything really. No one is suing the city.

No one can skate like that without a great deal of practice
shouts out to all those kids for all their hard work.and dedication, skateboarding is a sport just like baseball and football. As far as the risk the skaters learn how to fall correctly and have very few injuries. There are also federal laws that help all extreme sport parks to be protect from unfounded and ridiculous lawsuits
    law suits

I bet they’re not willing to sign a waiver though.

Then why is it it called a “HAND” rail, let’s face it, these kids get hurt and can really damage themselves, I have watched enough videos where these kids break bones and worse. They are young and will heal but it will affect them later in life. I also watch the skaters when passing by in these parks and they are not professionals or even good at doing these stunts by any means.

This is not a professional skate park and I hate to break the news to you, these aren’t professional skaters. Some are good, some not so much. Trust me, the same parents who allow their kids to do this willingly will be the first to sue the city when their kids end up in a cast or worse.

I really don’t care, Darwin’s theory at work I say, skate on! My problem is we live in a litigious society where no on takes responsibility for their idiotic behavior and sues for every stupid thing they do.

  • There not hand rails , they’re called grind rails .At the meeting for Greenstreet I asked the park Dept about it and Law suits . their answer was We are self insured .
I”m worried more about the thirty or so kid’s I’ve saw walking down Allen ave Some on bikes and some with skate boards walking towards the park .

Gerritsen Girl, Using your logic – we should take down any basketball hoop, swing set or monkeybars – just in case someone decides to jump off and may get hurt.
These kids are doing something that they enjoy doing in an area built for it. The kids are going to practice the “stunts” where ever they can – this park gives them somewhere to do it, without putting anyone else or anyone else’s property in danger.
I think this is an awesome picture and I’m glad the park is being used the way it was intended!

skateboarding is a very misunderstood sport but if you check your facts more kids die playing softball/little league in a year then kids that skate. Skateboarding is here to stay why not encourage the kids that want to do it or would you rather see some kids back the weeds setting cars on fire or finding some other things to do. Is there nothing postive to be said for those who use what was built for them instead of destroying the park. time to rethink that idea maybe

First of all, we don’t have to take down the basket ball hoops, swings or monkey bars, the kids will do that themselves, remember what they did to the trees that were planted, nice, I guess that is here to stay as well. By the way MRDR1007, 2 weeks ago there were 2 fires set in the weeds, not far from the park by the way, on a Sunday afternoon when the park was full of kids, my sister and I called the fire department out of concern for the kids in the park, So much for the park keeping the mongrels from setting fires, kids who will do that will do it regardless of if there is a park or not so that theory doesn’t flush.

I am glad the kids have a place to play, I am not against it, I am concerned about kids getting hurt, excuse me for being the only one. I am not saying to stop skate boarding, it looks fun but to be smart about it so no kid has to spend the summer in a cast, I haven’t heard about the mass killings in the softball/little league, haven’t seen one article about it happening on this website. What do they do run after each other with bats like in “The Sopranos”?

  • Wow it always amazes me that no matter what the subject your always one step behind everyone el’s . We are all neighbor’s here and are untitled to our opinion’s without someone trying to belittle someone by using sarcasm or pointing out minor spelling mistakes . However good natured ribbing is always funny . The statement was that more kids die playing softball/little league in a year then kids that skate board , not that their was a mass murder at a softball game . Be a good neighbor and respect others opinion .

  • Statistacially speaking, I would assume all sports are very safe, and the kid in the picture obviously knows what hes doing. Hes even eating a banana while grinding.

Speaking of Baseball there is a ban aluminum bats here in NYC

Metal Bats Are an Issue of Life and Death

In Little League batter’s box, it’s safety vs. homers

OMG people please…..If the park was set up to be a extream park weather for bike or skate board that’s what it should be used for. If not children or teens will all ways do what there not suppose to do. If they get hurt then they have to pay the price.
But if you ask me “it looks like Peter PAN!!!” So he will not get hurt he’ll just FLY away.

    • Each year, children between the ages of 0-14 years, sustain an estimated 38,155 roller skating injuries and represent 57 percent of all rollerblading/in-line skating injuries.
    • Each year, there are approximately 61,000 injuries to children involving skateboards.
    • In 2004, an estimated number of 18,743 head injuries were treated in emergency rooms due to skateboarding.

I do not think there were 18,000 head injuries treated in emergency rooms in all other sports combined for 100 years, never mind just one year.

    Gerritsen Girl…

The handrail was built exactly for what I’m doing. I’ve been to camp for this 4 times. I’ve been on a board my whole teenage life and plan to keep at it well into adulthood. My parents, if you know them, would never sue the city. We’ve never pondered suing a soul… we’re the opposite because we understand it gets you nowhere. As for the real sport comment… I played competitive baseball from 5-18 years old. I went to Illinois for the Cal Ripken World Series in 2000. The ones who get hurt are the ones who are too young to be on their own and their parents are nowhere to be found. I’m almost 20 and although it’s not the wisest of ages, it’s old enough to be on my own doing the tricks I do. Besides, I look out for younger kids and give them tips on how to stay safe…

20? Aren’t u a little too old to be hanging out at a skateboarding park for kids?

Featured Man…..I am sorry, pls disregard above comment.
I forget that todays kids are 19, 20 etc. In my day we were already working full time, going to college, getting married etc. At almost age 20 u r doing the right thing. Have good clean fun and enjoy while u can. Life is too short, just stay away from drugs, beer and negative people and u will live a long healthy happy life. Now, if someone would have told me that 30 years aga I wouldn’t have been sitting here alone, knocking a fine young man for doing his thing. Again, I am sorry, follow your dream.

Featured man, I wrote the real sports remark. You are an exception and I am sure there are more then you. I have to believe you are Frankie’s son, so of course you played baseball and you were/are a good player. Unfortunately you are probably a Yankee fan like your father. But if you are Frankie’s son I am sure you are a good guy with a bright future. I played baseball and whiffle ball with Frankie when we were young and he was a great player. I think he was probably the best player in the Beach.

I’m 19. But how old are these skateboarders on TV and making more money than all of us? 30s… even 40s. So no, I’m not too old. My dad and all of the adults play softball and their over 50. The Pagans… you know ‘em. It’s all about fun.

Anonymous, I am a good neighbor, I respect other people’s property, I pick up after my dog, I don’t go around crashing cars into innocent people’s property, I don’t steal cars or throw eggs, rocks, etc. at other people on Halloween and in this neighborhood that is pretty damn good You need to respect my opinion even if it isn’t yours. My opinion is just that, an opinion which isn’t right or wrong it just is. Who died and made you King/or Queen of Gerritsen Avenue? Just because I don’t agree with people doesn’t make me wrong, get over yourself and stop being such a pompous jerk and by the way else is spelled this way so if you are going to pontificate to me at least be educated about it. Just an example of this wonderful educational system we have, maybe they read the messages on this board and realized that the schools weren’t worth the money because no one seems to know how to spell, Anonymous, are you a teacher there by chance?
