Golden Gate Could Become Two Hotels

Via NY Daily News

A hot-sheet hotel in Sheepshead Bay could become two name-brand hotels – including a new Marriott – after community opposition convinced the developer to scrap plans to build luxury condos there.

The Golden Gate Motor Inn, which since the 1960s has drawn both lawful travelers and riffraff, could be turned into a Fairfield Inn or a Marriott, said developer Harshad Patel, who says both chains and others have expressed interest.

“As a developer, we would like to do residential, but we know people in the neighborhood don’t want residential, so we are looking at middle and high-end hotels,” Patel said.

  • Why is it that people do not want residential there? Don’t newer, nicer homes in the neighborhood add value and eventually raise surrounding home prices?

Newer and nicer homes is nice, but the problem is over-development. Developers try to squeeze in too many condo’s on one small plot of land. Take a look at before and after pictures of the bay. It looks like an apartment house lined Manhattan street now as compared to what it was years ago.

My two cents: Sheepshead Bay’s once unique character as a fishing community is now drowning many fathoms beneath the weight of residential housing…I think of the onslaught of condos everywhere as Sheepshead Bay’s own form-fitted cement shoes. At some point, somebody’s got to put their (ahem) foot down.

How many overpriced, unaffordable homes do we need? There are practically no restaurants left on Emmons Ave. 3 Family units have taken the place of 1 family homes. Parking was insane on Emmons in the 90′s with single family homes, where do the 2 extra familys per home park?
We don’t have to worry about the lack of restaurants, the prices for these homes are so outrageous the average unit owner probably can no longer afford eating out.
We don’t really need another hotel but at least a hotel brings in revenue & jobs.

I live in the area – and as mentioned above there are luxury condo’s everywhere now. I didnt mind much when empty lots were built up to become condos — but when businesses started closing and condos arrived in their place it ticked me off.

In my opinion sheepshead bay could use some more stores – resources for the area’s residents. But given the choice between another hotel and more condos – i’d take the hotels. Lets hope its not as ugly as the new best western they built at the corner of nostrand. Ugh.

I think a nice hotel would be wonderful. Maybe something classy like that Mayflower Hotel down in Washington DC.

How many people actually are going to fly into NY and stay on Knapp St next to a sewage plant (that stinks) and the garbage dump (that stinks) with car racing on the B/Pkwy? And what are they going to do take a stroll and see the condo complexes? Why isn’t the community fighting for a much needed supermarket?

Kudos to this comment!! Love it!

As for the need for a decent hotel – let’s face it, I wouldn’t want my out of town family staying at a sleeze bag motel like the Windjammer or even its neighbor, the Comfort Inn only because of its proximity to the Jammer. I’d sooner pitch a tent for them in my yard. As for the supermarket – I really like this idea too, and it would really be great, but I don’t see it happening.

A much needed supermarket? We have Waldbaums on Ocean ave, Pathmark on Nostrand, Stop & Shop On ave Y, Food Basics on Coyle, Keyfood on Gerritsen…There is too many already!

How about a clean supermarket? Waldbaums on Ocean is a pit & so is Keyfood. Keyfood’s aisles are too small. Food basic’s? Went once, absolutely would not buy meat there.

Pathmark on Cropsey is about the best we have & that is not really in the area.

That’s the problem, it RAISES the price of real estate. Blue Collared families cannot afford such a high cost. Overdevelopment is also a problem. Remember, the area surrounding us was once swamp land. What we need are more stores and more community involvement, not development. Besides, the Marriot belongs downtown and in Manhattan. The last thing we need are snotty upscale tourists
