While the B&B Carousell itself was saved and will someday reappear as part of the city’s planned Steeplechase Plaza, the sign for it that has been on Surf Avenue since the days of Luna Park is now gone. It fell victim to a paint job that was photographed by the Coney Island Message Board’s Captain Nemo, who calls the destruction of the sign “a crime.” The sign was painted on metal that was bolted to the building and, apparently, couldn’t be removed without causing a lot of damage and the subject of saving it had come up in the past. Saving it is no longer an issue, however, as this small yet significant piece of Coney history has been obliterated via paint roller. While one can appreciate that it might have been difficult or impossible to remove from the building, you certainly have to wonder if there was a way to restore the sign and make it part of the new building and whatever ends up there. No matter. It’s now another bit of Brooklyn’s past that is just a photograph.
I agree this should off been a crime!

who cares

M, I guess you are an angry frustrated person. I have fond memories of Palisades park and Coney Island, but Coney is in need of new things. I bet you no longer live in the area. I want to see Coney improve and change has to come in order for that to happen.

FYI… I do still live in the area…and I agree that Coney Island needs improvement, but my comment was for the carousel sign being painted on…if only you knew how to read…. : (

I not only grew up going to B&B Carousel, but I lived across the street from the owner from 1958 until 1979 and It is a shame that nobody thought it was important to save a piece of eeryone’s childhood. I now reside in West Palm Beach, Fl and would give anything to go back to those days.

I think its a disgrace!!! This was a piece of history. I want to know… what they did with all those old signs in the train station. Did you ever hear of preservation & restoration.

I too grew up going to Coney Island and remember fondly going on the carousel with my sister as our Grandfather and sometimes our mother would wait for us to grab the brass ring. As we got a littl eolder we would sometimes go ourselves. I was sad to hear of the owners passing in 2001 as he was always nice to us. If I am not mistaken he even asked my mother out once, lol. Had things happened differently maybe I could have still been running the carousel today. Painting over the sign was clear stupidity. Very sad to see.

I cannot believe with all the technology and tools that we have available to us, that it was not possible to remove it. Probably cost too much and no one was going to pay…too bad for Brooklyn, more history disappears
