Breaking: Marine Park Field House Going to Be Finally Reuilt

The old “Field House of Horrors” as the Brooklyn View put it in September is going to be rebuilt. Rebuilt as a senior center and multi purpose space.

The problem with this project has been money, Its always money. Our elected officials raised 5.5 Million dollars but the city changed its building codes for all new buildings have to be built “Green”. All green buildings have to get 5% of its energy from solar, have geothermal heating and cooling, all energy saver lights, and be made with recycled materials. The 5.5 million was not enough and as the Brooklyn view reported all of the bids came back way too high, around 7 million, and the project was stalled.

Senator Golden somehow cut a deal with the mayor for the rest of the money. Congrats.

Here is his press release:

State Senator Martin Golden, the Chairman of the New York State Senate Aging Committee, today is announcing that a contract has been awarded by the City of New York to build a new senior center in Marine Park and that ground will be broken on the construction this Spring.

Senator Marty Golden stated, “This is a great day for all the seniors in Marine Park who are on the brink of seeing the newest senior center in our City constructed right here in our own backyard. The seniors of Marine Park deserve the chance to have a better quality of life and to age with dignity. For many, senior centers become like second homes, so they deserve to be the very best.”

Golden continued, “I commend Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his administration for their commitment to this project and to our seniors. Working alongside former Councilman Herb Berman in the City Council, I saw his determination to build this center and today, this dream has been realized. I thank Councilman Fidler, Assemblyman Maisel, and others, for it is through our efforts that we will make Brooklyn an even better place to grow old.”

The funding for this project is a combination of New York State and New York City funding secured by the elected officials. Senator Golden, Councilman Fidler and Assemblyman Maisel demonstrated their strong commitment to this project by obtaining significant levels of funding to build a new, state of the art senior center in Marine Park.

Field house or rest rooms should be open until 8 pm. I have 3 kids playing baseball in the park on little league teams, and they have to go to the bathroom somewhere, If they go behind a tree, I would get a ticket, any other parents agree with this? There are things going on in the park from spring to end of Summer. Please leave all bathrooms open until 8 at least.
    Thank You
