Representatives from the MTA announced a bold plan to build brand new stations at Neck Rd. and Avenue U, disrupting Q and B Train service beyond 2010.
The stations, both 100 years old have never had any comprehensive repair. The plan is to completely demolish and completely rebuild each station. Representatives from the MTA promised wider platforms, larger stairwells, more exits, newer windscreens that are easier to clean, and vision panels.
The services changes will be drastic and will last many years. Starting in the spring of 2008, the MTA estimates that for 11 months after work begins, all local southbound traffic will travel express between Kings Highway and Sheepshead Bay Rd, so riders at the affected stops will have to get off at Sheepshead Bay Rd. and travel nothbound to reach their stops. The same will happen for all northbound traffic for the subsequent 9 months, with riders having to pick up their northern commute at either Sheepshead Bay Rd. or Kings Highway.. A shuttle will be provided between Avenue U and Kings highway to lighten any delays for passengers.
The project is expected to be awarded to a contractor by March of 2008, with all construction ending in 2010. After these stations are built, all stations up to Avenue H will also be rehabilitated, causing even greater disruption.
Great! As if it isn’t crowded enough at Kings Highway during rush hour…. we only have ONE train track getting into the city….everyone in the neighborhood is at the mercy of the B/Q line…this news bascially tells me that I will have a miserable commute for the next 3 + years….

I see that the MTA went ahead with fare increases and cutbacks in service. If they claim that they don’t have any money, why are they going ahead with these station rehabilitation’s in the first place? Why don’t they wait and see if the MTA has money first so that it doesn’t come out of tax payers pockets? Also I see that they want to have shuttle service to serve the affected stations via the bus, but they failed to neglect the Neck Rd station. My Question is how will people get to the Sheepshead Bay station or even to the Kings Highway stations to even catch the B or Q trains when during rush hours the B49 bus is packed with kids going to school and for those kids going to Kingsborough Community College even if you were thinking of going into Sheepshead Bay in the first place! Also, in the northbound direction of the B49, that bus doesn’t even go to the Quintin Rd and the East 16 Street part of the station when all of the other busses do. People need to address these concerns because I use mass transit everyday and I see the overcrowding flow in the Kingsborough direction going into Sheepshead Bay and it is not pretty. Can they make a loop for the B49 bus route so that people don’t have to go into the Sheepshead Bay direction and not to create another shuttle bus and wasted money because the B49 is I feel the answer to the Problems of missed subway stations on the Brighton Line.
