Manhattan Beach Too Hot to Handle

Manhattan Beach is a small, quiet neighborhood with tree-lined streets and large homes. But it is also a political hotbed. The entire neighborhood is fighting amongst itself over a variety of conflicting positions on local issues. You wouldn’t expect people to be fighting with each other in a “nice” neighborhood. You would expect them to be a strong, unified political district.

A couple of things are going on that have caused a commotion with Manhattan Beach residents. Dr. Ron Biondo is up for reelection as president of the Manhattan Beach Civic Association and there are groups within the community determined to stop Dr. Ron from being elected. Dr. Ron lost favor in the community with some negative comments about beach goers over the summer.

Now, in what some might say was a desperate move, Dr. Ron supposedly tried to amass votes for himself by getting friends and their family members to pay last minute membership dues so that they would have voting rights. It’s too bad that all of those new members’ checks have to be returned because of the Group’s custom prohibiting this type of underhandedness, which has been attempted in past elections. I’m not sure how many checks actually are being returned, but presumably, it will more than likely make a difference on the outcome of the vote. I would think that those people who have had checks returned would be invited to join after the election is over, but who knows if they will?

Then there is the issue of the “Beachside Safety Patrol” which is Manhattan Beach’s private security force that patrols the neighborhood. In recent years the annual membership cost has quadrupled to $400. The paying members aren’t too happy with the residents who aren’t paying dues at all but still get the benefit of added protection in the neighborhood.

There is also a discussion about tinkering with the flow of traffic in to and out of Manhattan Beach. This includes new traffic lights on Irwin Street, Shore Boulevard, Neptune and Cass Place as well as possibly eliminating parking along the south side of Shore Boulevard to facilitate traffic.

We at GerritsenBeach.Net love the crazy Manhattan Beach news, there is way to much craziness coming out of there. In the words of one of their members to us. “Keep on bloggin”. That I shall do and keep on doing.

They are going to get themselves sued for not letting people join. There is nothing in their constitution that refers to this so called customof not letting new people join. This one is going ot court.

  • Finally, people woke up from their deep sleep of denial. This has been on my mind since the time I was attending KBCC , which was a few years ago. I always thought this community goes through difficulties, especially during the summer season. This much I know, most people that attendant community college unfortunately, care less about area. They throw garbage on the streets, thugs drive in blasting their car music. I do sympathize with people that live there. Why cant they make a beach private in order to keep area clean, safe and enjoyable that community contribute it so much?
