While reading the comments about the Bakery late one night ( around 1 A.M), I called the number shown in the picture ( listed on the awning )being so late I thought that I would possibly get a recording and it would say when the store would open, but to my surprise a man with a very thick accent answered ( possibly russian) and it sounded like I woke him up… I just thought that it was very odd

Someone went in there to buy a roll. The woman behind the counter din’t understand what a roll was. After a while of trying to explain, the women behind the counter figured it out and said it would cost $1.50. FOR ONE ROLL $1.50-forget about it

So, the new bakery has nothing to do with the old Leon’s, right? I live in Jersey now and drove over there at least a few times a year JUST to get the cookies, the napoleans, eclairs, and a Charlotte Rouse for the ride back. Was crushed when I went last year and found them closed. Does anyone know if the recipes have been kept by the new bakery, or is it all new stuff?

leons is back! but this time with some international twist…they seem to have brought some mediterranean stuff into the mix.

i loved their rainbow cake…very yummy and juicy, and love those breads…

I had a Black and White there recently and it was awful. Stale, covered in plastic wrap, the icing was icky and the cookie hard (not just from being stale). For me, the Black and White cookie is my bakery barometer.

I grew up across the street from Leon’s, 1960′s into the 70′s. The one thing they had that no bakery could ever compete with was their rainbow cookies, and I have tried many. I live on the island now but next time I’m over there, if they have rainbow cookies, that will be my measure of how good they really are.

  • Forget the rainbows

I’ve had them once, they were dry as a bone. Since they were new, I tried them again, – same thing. Blech. Other pastries, cookies, etc – not so bad.

There hasn’t been a rainbow cookie like Leon’s since they left. Why would you not ask for their recipes? If anyone can give a decent rainbow cookie bakery – please, I beg you – let us know!

ask who for the recipe? the origianl leon that died far away from knapp street or the owners before, that let the cat sleep on the cookies all night and had roaches and dead mice all over?? I thought this was a current news and review site not a memorial site for all the leons fans?! I care less for a “health-department-shut-down” bakerys recipe as long as the NEW place is clean and fresh! I like most of their goodies and if u guys don’t try them out because they’re not leons then that’s ur loss cause leons is not coming back!

Wow! That is so sad. My grandparents used to live right across from Leon’s and on every visit we would get rugelleh and black and white’s . I remember the boxes tied with string stacked in the backseat of our chevrolet. Another passiing…

It’s a shame.. The rainbow cookies are gone and so is the Babka… They could have made a fortune putting all the recipes in a book… Too bad.

Say what you want about health dept etc… All the restaurants in the area have had their write ups.

I remember Leons from way back when… Shame that there isn’t any replacement.

@Rose, Rose, I agree. Boy, do I miss that Rye bread! Going to visit people who moved from the beach, they always said the same thing. Stop at Leons…… Michaels does have good rainbow cookies, etc. but I still mourn Leons. A cookbook would have been nice.
