Man arrested for placing pipe bomb on SUV

NEW YORK — An explosive device was planted on a car in a case of domestic strife, spurring a manhunt that spanned two of the city’s boroughs and prompted an hours-long evacuation of a residential block, police and witnesses said.

Officers found a device similar to a pipe bomb around 12:45 p.m. Saturday on a vehicle on Walnut Avenue, in the Great Kills section of Staten Island. The device was removed without incident, they said. It was taken to the police firing range in Rodman’s Neck and detonated.

The investigation led officers to a house on East 29th Street, in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn. As a precaution, they evacuated the surrounding block.

“They knocked on my door and said, ‘You’ve got to get out of your house,”’ said resident Bess Chechel. When she asked why, she said, she was told only, “It’s dangerous.”

Officers eventually entered and searched the house, finding neither the suspect nor any explosives. Residents, who had waited nearby for hours, were allowed to return home late Saturday, police said.

Police said no one was hurt during the incident.

Police later arrested Baudelio Rodriguez, 47, of the Sheepheads Bay section of Brooklyn on Sunday morning. He was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful dealing with fireworks, attempted arson and attempted criminal mischief.
