Verizon has put up about 100 new utility poles for its new fiber-optic cable network in Marine Park. Completely surprising the residents. Homes that never had utility poles in front of their homes now have a 45 foot pole in front of their homes. The neighborhood either has either had poles in the back homes, or buried cables in the back.

The Marine Park Civic Association president Greg Borruso, “What they don’t understand is, people feel like they’ve been violated.” There is at least one block to have led a petition against the new poles, and they have drawn the support of the local community board.

In response to the protests, John Bonomo, a Verizon spokesman, explained that potential problems could be associated with burying the cables or stringing them behind houses, and said that tearing up the street or waiting to gain access to backyards would hamper workers’ ability to move quickly. “It’s really quite an advance in technology, and our intention is really getting out there as quickly as possible.”
